Some tips
Not my own. Causabans Books blog is where I have been getting some information on preparation as well as the Chicken Littles Ravelry group. What would I do without these sources? Doesn’t matter. It is what you do with them that counts.
Causabans Books got the idea from a reader, I believe, whose church does this. Every week, the church hands out a card with items listed-3 of them-that they hope the congregation will go stock up on. So Causabens decided to do it too. Great idea and getting the word out is crucial.
This weeks items: pasta, popcorn and matches. I am not going to get long and drawn out here because if you clicked on the link you got yourself the explanation of each item already.
I do want to point out that pasta right now is on sale at Jewel stores. 5 boxes for 5.55. Not a great price if you have a good memory, but better than not on sale. Also, popcorn, pay attention to this, not the microwavable kind. I got it for the regular price. Seems like only the microwavable kind goes on sale. I will keep going back for more, looking for coupons and generic brands.
Since I stopped eating cereal, I have been using popcorn instead. I pour some alternative milk product on top and it is delicious. I got this idea from the time my daughter was in a Little House book club and they sent her a pioneer recipe book. It sounded awful but turned out to be great and filling.
I didn’t remember the matches and come to think of it, candles might come in handy too. but I also picked up some cans of tuna fish in water since they were a dollar each.
I then went to the farmers market where there were only two vendors, my fave farm (Nichols Farm and Orchid) and a florist. The fave farm had been affected by the recent flooding in the Midwest but they put on a show of force and brought us apples, applepears and lots of taters and corn. I got my chilis and will be making a chili relish this weekend I think, maybe tomorrow. No, chili relish is not a survival food. it is a comfort food for us. maybe the chilis could ward off heart problems though so maybe that is a survival food after all.
Okay, off I go. Hubbys birthday today and I have a paper to write. Nearly done….with the thesis statement that is.
